Somerset 2015
At this time of year comrade's thoughts turn to his favourite form of cricket - http://www.somersetcountycc.co.uk/2015/03/somerset-sign-corey-anderson/ - an early sign of intent, will it bring success?

Well it won't bring success in the competition Somerset fans really want to win. Have they got a replacement for Compton? Really hoping he will provide the necessary grit in the Middx line up, especially with no Rogers this year.

A good signing - http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/32021984 - or would the preference be Brendon McCullum or AB De Villiers, maybe all three?

Re: Somerset 2015
But it will probably fill Taunton a few times which will no doubt please the chairman.

Yes, it will. But what would make him far more pleased would be the sight of the championship flag flying over Taunton in 12 months time. This signing won't do anything to make that happen, which is what I'd argue for most Somerset fans is the real measure of success.

Re: Somerset 2015
We've waited 124 years, perhaps we could win the T20 this year and wait 'till our 125 season to win the Championship...
In all seriousness after a few nearly moments any trophy would be nice. Would be good to finally get that Championship though.

Yes agreed Ashley, when you are thirsty you dont say no to water cos you prefer champagne. And Somerset fans are quite thirsty now. Minus Compton and Kieswetter I dont see a championship winning team, but hey what do we know what makes a champion team.

LOL, just checked, been a bit barren since 1993 in that respect, you will have many fans who dont remember any title success.
Difficult to look beyond Yorkshire again I guess, they seem to have great depth and international calls dont seem to affect them. A good start as awlays essential, a third of the season over by the end of May.

true, luckily I saw the best years back in early 80s.

Agreed. Yorkies thrashing of MCC in the desert was ominous. Pleased to see Compton getting runs in the 2nd innings. Mx will probably start strongly again but can they handle the disruption caused by the one day stuff? Somerset should have done it a couple of years ago, but if my boys don't, I'd be happy for them to finally win the thing.

Re: Somerset 2015
Good rearguard action by Middlesex today, something profoundly absent from Somerset's display, yet only 3 points between them. So it wont quite be an early er 32 pointer next week !

Re: Somerset 2015
I've got a feeling Compton will have to repeat his game saving innings of today on a regular basis.
A pity the big game is so early in the season again - Middx never seem to go to Taunton in high Summer. I'm not keen on watching cricket before June!

What a day of contrasts that was! Record Somerset partnership v Middlesex, 7 wickets falling for 31 with 5 ducks altogether! Although days 3 and 4 look wet, it could be interesting if Mx don't get past follow on target. Oh for a Rogers innings tomorrow!

Re: Somerset 2015
Somerset website heralds a commanding position while Tresco and Hildy say they wanted 500 and Middlesex to bat twice. 408 not enough to put Middlesex out of it with 3 full days to go and our brittle middle order. 1 st couple of sessions tomorrow will be key.

Re: Somerset 2015
With Mx 194/2, I'm pleasantly surprised. But our latest middle order collapse is always just a few overs away! When I saw the lovely sunny weather this morning, i regretted my decision to give it a miss, but it's cold now and they're off for rain!
Sounds like Compton could be in trouble for his reaction to the umpire's decision on his dismissal...

Re: Somerset 2015
Bit of a fightback by our lads and given both team's batting frailties a decisive result still could be on the cards despite the weather.

Sounds like Overton had a good spell with the new ball - Mx will be looking to Harris to get them out of a hole again...

Looks like Tres's skills as a declarer are going to be put to the test. Middx have quite a good record of late batting out the last day for a draw...

He's very cautious unless Maynard can influence him. That said he just Finn for 16 in one over. See how Rayner performs and whether the pitch is helpful, might be crucial.

This could have an exciting finish! Mx 227/3, with 175 more needed in minimum of 43 overs.

Not even close. Long hard season ahead I think after 2 defeats from 2 at home. When are the Conf South fixtures out??

Re: Somerset 2015
I'm not really surprised by our start as i always felt we were more likely to be relegation candidates than challenge for the championship. The loss of Kieswetter was a huge loss bearing in mind our inconsistent batting lineup. Perhaps we would have been better off keeping Meschede . He must surely have done far better than Groenwald - who has done nothing to justify his inclusion in the county championship side.

Re: Somerset 2015
Middlesex fan in peace!
Quite how Somerset lost that after being 377/3 on the first afternoon is the main topic of any inquest. Middlesex had forgotten how to win - our last 2 championship wins were last May and those were against the two teams who were relegated.
The loss of Overton probably made the victory easier, but we were without Murtagh - the second game running we've finished a game with 10 men.
Still think these two, plus Hants and Worcs, will be fighting to avoid relegation come September. You definitely need a new captain.
