Firstly, apologies to anyone who objects to this thread being in the City section - if there are strong feelings against that it can be moved to the 'All other football' section but that is rarely used these days so probably won't be viewed as much.

The tournament in Germany kicks off next Friday (14/6) so a chance before then to post your predictions, other thoughts and enter the fantastic predictions compo!

Simply predict the 12 teams who will automatically qualify for the knock out stages by finishing 1st or 2nd in their groups. 1 point for each correct prediction. (not 3rd place qualifiers as it's too complicated!)

To simplify things, just copy and paste the groups and teams from the list below and delete the two you predict will end 3rd/4th.

Also, to divide any on equal points at the end of the tournament the higher position will be decided by who you predict will win the tournament. The stage teams are eliminated will be used as a tie breaker. So if in equal 20th WSP predicted Albania to be champions and Ashley went for Scotland then Ashley will finish in the higher position if the Scots reach the last 16 but Albania are eliminated at the group stage. Simple!

There are only 6 groups so we can only select 12 teams if were predicting 1st and 2nd places. You put select 16 teams but we can't if picking winners and runners up of each group which will equal 12 teams. I might be wrong. Please delete if I'm wrong ?

Also in another thread you wrote about England always getting the easy side of the draw. That's because England are the biggest team what ever side of the draw were in. So either side of the draw looks easy to us.

COMRADE POWELL from another thread. You’ll have to remind me of the bad luck England have suffered in the past (I WILL BUT IT WILL TAKE ME A FEW HOURS TO COMPILE MY BAD LUCK REPORT) but they have certainly struck gold with the draw this time (WE'RE THE BEST TEAM SO FEAR NO SIDE OF THE DRAW). Along with Portugal they have what looks like the easiest pathway to the semis (and elimination by France (NO NEED TO FEAR FRANCE THEY WERE LUCKY TO BEAT US IN QATAR) provided they win their group, which looks a given. A third placed team would await them in the last 16 and a runner up in the QF.  But finishing second (NO CHANCE 3 OUT OF 3 WINS FOR US) in the group puts them in the tougher half of the draw (which would make up for the fortunate way things panned out for them in Russia 2018 (COLUMBIA, SWEDEN AND CROATIA ARE DECENT TEAMS!).

No doubt England will either need to win the last group game to scrape into the last 16 or they will start off with power and style and gradually get worse throughout the tournament.

After all the hype surrounding this wonder team it really is time to deliver.

Since Southgate has announced the squad my confidence has fallen. Dropping Grealish is bang out of order. Senior players have knocked Southgates door demanding to know why Grealish was dropped. This is going to effect squad morale and the squad morale will be effected. Maguire being injured is a huge blow too. People say he's awful for Man U but he's never let England down. We also have no left back currently and are relying on Shaw to get fit. Chilwell is injured. I'd have took Pope in goal as well as back up. After the squad was announced we lose to Iceland at Wembley. Half the Defence is looking dodgy. Right footer Trippier at left back. Someone inexperienced at centre back. Stones and Walker world class. Not as confident now but trust in Southgate. When Gazza was dropped in WC 98, I had the same feeling when Grealish was dropped.

Grealish is no great loss. A one trick pony who relies on a weak ref being fooled by his dying swan act. Gascoigne was well past his best when a manager finally had the guts to drop him.
Big mistake to select Shaw - how many times have injury prone players been taken to tournaments only to play little part?
Tend to agree with you re Maguire - the same with Pickford. The Iceland goal was embarrassing and Maguire did well to miss that game. We will need to score plenty against decent opponents - as you say, defence looks dodgy.
Will be very surprised if they don't reach the knock outs (3rd place will do in 4 of the 6 groups) but then it will be up to the likes of Bellingham to prove they're as good as their adoring fans claim.

It is often very hard work watching England. Players don't perform as well as they do for their clubs. Sometimes this is because they aren't good enough for the step up to international football but senior guys also have too many poor games.
I think Bellingham is absolutely pivotal to our success. He is one player that is not afraid to do at international level that he does at club level and this will drive the team on. Foden rarely does it on the England stage whereas Saka does. Grealish doesn't. Shaw does which is why he has to go.
But you have to have a team that is solid in every position and at the moment it doesn't look it. Defensively it isn't good enough which is why we need the added security of two defensive midfielders. If we had better options in defence I'd have Stones in midfield. He was a revelation for Man City. But I do like Mainoo.

Unless there are any objections I am delighted to welcome you to this wonderful compo, Chris! (provided you don't win it... )

Germany provided the tournament with an excellent opening performance. True the Scots were weak and weakened by the deserved red card but the way they burst out of the blocks, stamped their authority all over the pitch and scored some stunning goals suggests that they will be one of the front runners.

I have no problem with Steve's entry, the Germany result is not going to change anything.
I was just surprised how poor the Scots were. Their passing was awful which gave them no chance of retaining the ball. And their judgement off the ball was woeful. Not one of their players would get near the England squad.

Agreed. And how many of the England team would get near Germany's?
