Somerset 2014
A better start than normal, i.e., we didnt lose heavily. Dealt with scoreboard pressure and a well balanced scorecard. Yorkshire turned down a deal apparently.

Re: Somerset 2014
I think you are going to need a more inspiring captain than Tres to win sufficient games at Taunton to keep you up.
Very relieved by Middx's thumping of Notts, as their brittle middle order suggests they are not good enough yet for another title. Hopefully England will ignore Finn's good start and will decide Robson is too Australian to partner Cook...

Well batted, Compton. If Somerset go down, I would like to see him return to Middx next year. With Sussex away next, it's hard to see where Somerset's first win will come...

We'll park the bus at Sussex Chelsea style!
Without Derbyshire there's no obvious 'whipping-boys' this year

lancashire?
given the starts somerset have had in recent seasons, draws against last season's top two is a big improvement - especially as without a day lost a win over durham would have be a real possibility

Re: Somerset 2014
Northants seem obvious candidates, lost by an innings today. Good resilience by Somerset again and will improve confidence. Martin has a point, it is about winning in the championship, indeed top teams will often lose a few in the quest for a win. Not sure Somerset have put last season's brittleness far enough behind them to be too gung ho just yet.

and i bet you didn't predict a win either! but well done to the yokels, a very promising display. almost a pity that it was upstaged by middx's incredible 7 wicket victory over just about everyone's favourites for the title, yorkshire.
what both results show is what a great compo the county championship is. more the pity that it will soon go into its summer hibernation, making way for the turgid, predictable and contrived tripe which is T20!

thomas is causing mayhem today - 4 wkts in 4 balls.
poor bas didn't get there until 1115 and only saw the last 2.
A36 has contacted BBC live commentary with an interesting question...

Re: Somerset 2014
I gues we will take that at half way. Better depth to the batting and bowling, not just relying on one or two. Consistency will be the challenge of course.

Re: Somerset 2014
could be an intriguing final day tomorrow at uxbridge. if somerset win, they'll thank compton again, who was dropped early on (mx really need to sort this fielding problem out). but after what happened at trent bridge, don't expect a generous declaration from rogers.

He who dares wins Rodney ! But he didn't even set Northants a target last week. Feel the weather will win.

well you weren't wrong about the declaration - 390 of 72 overs was never a realistic target
after somerset's declaration to try to get a result it's a shame that rogers didn't follow suit - given how close the division is a draw isn't much use to either side

Re: Somerset 2014
perhaps. the 40 overs lost to the weather didn't help either. i'd imagine rogers thoughts were why give an opponent a sniff of victory and perhaps he backed his bowlers to take the 10 wickets in those 72 overs. the bottom line is that both teams have been distracted in the past 6 weeks by T20 and will do well to get their seasons back on track with virtually no more games between now and september.

a great effort today by the northants lower order, nearly enabling me to ram yuffie's comment above back down his throat!
and your cause could be helped by lanky, who are giving notts an almighty fright this afternoon...

Re: Somerset 2014
certainly northants made somerset work for their win
and it makes a change for lancs to not just roll over and take one from notts even if in the end it was the same outcome - at least it looks like they'll be joining northants as a minor county again next season
