Outfield players in goal
I think I've asked this before (considering it just came up in the title when I started typing the thread out!), can anyone think of examples when we've had to use outfield players in goal?
The ones I remember:
Richard Crowley for Alan Churchward
Martin Paul for Mark Hervin and Sal Bibbo
Adrian Foster for Mark Hervin
Gary Thorne for Mark Bryant
Phil Walsh for Paul Evans (in a friendly at Yate)
Steve Jones for Paul Evans (twice)
Lewis Hogg for Paul Evans (twice)
I also spoke to Friggy about him replacing Ken Allen in goal at Dorchester once - can anyone remember if Ken was sent off or not? Friggy thinks he might have been whilst he was stretchered off.
Thanks

Yes, Ken Allen was stretchered off with a broken leg at Dorchester.

Re: Outfield players in goal
Was he sent off at the same time? And was it his last game?

It was his last game, but I don't think he was sent off.
I remember when Kenny was injured during the championship season and his deputy, Warren, was cup tied, that Paul Gover was lined up to play in goal at Merthyr. Luckily Kenny recovered in time to play in that spiteful game (both on and off the pitch) and we won.

Cheers!
Farnborough fielded an outfield player in goal for a few games near the end of last season, think he kept a clean sheet on his debut.

I think that Singey went in goal at one game...........he certainly played in every other position as an on-field player!
I remember Ken breaking his leg at Dorchester and Rich Witty observing with a wonderful remark.... "a bit of a pisser for a postman".
Still makes me chuckle all those years later!

Glynn Broom was an ambulance man. Ken was definitely a postie when he broke his leg at Dorchester.

Does other teams count? Wealdstone had a defender in goal in the championship season as their keeper refused to play. They had to wake their youth keeper up and he played the second half.

Re: Outfield players in goal
It was the last five games of last season. It was Nic Ciardini, now at Havant and Waterlooville, who played in goal for Farnborough. They beat Staines 2-1, lost 3-1 to Sutton, drew 3-3 with Truro, beat Billericay 4-3 and beat Chelmsford 3-1, so no clean sheets, 11 goals conceded in 5 games.stillmanjunior wrote:Farnborough fielded an outfield player in goal for a few games near the end of last season, think he kept a clean sheet on his debut.
Regarding Ken Allen's career ending broken leg at Dorchester, it was September 1988, and the challenge in which he broke his leg also conceded a penalty which produced the only goal of the game. Under the current laws on denying a goal scoring opportunity, it would presumably have been a red card, but not in 1988.
