The point about Ferriby's penalties is that they whacked them really hard. If in doubt put your laces through it.

Whatever criticisms one might have of management or players we have much to thank them for for a fantastically exciting Trophy run. I never dreamt we would get so close to Wembley, so well done to all concerned.

This video explains the differences between the Ferriby Pens & Bath Pens, ironic that it was filmed at Twerton yet none of the Bath team involved.

I'm surprised others haven't responded to your 1st comment. I thought Pratt's penalty at Twerton was superb and no keeper would have saved it, even if they had made some contact. As the returning Lord says, leather the thing!

I don't want to get involved in the farce which decided the tie, as in my book penalty shoot outs are as relevant to the match as a game of darts in the bar afterwards. However, despite Skyblue's stats, I do agree with you about keepers standing still. I don't get why keepers try to ape Groblaar by trying to distract the penalty taker by throwing their arms about and dancing around on the line. Surely it's better to be still and focused. The tactic of many penalty takers, especially those at the very top of the game, is to wait for the keeper to commit themselves and then simply roll the ball into the opposite corner. Their run up is so short and slow that it must be very difficult to suddenly produce a hard shot if the keeper does not move until the ball is kicked.

I do agree that several of Pratt's penalties this season have been less than convincing though (Ferriby shoot-out aside) the only one I can remember him missing was when he hit the post at Bromley.

When I used to coach Junior sides, we always practiced penalties, especially for tournaments and Dr Bray's research (or common sense) proves that there is an unsaveable zone that no keeper can get to in the time the ball leaves the striker's foot, to it hitting the goal. I always told my players to hit it hard & put it where the keeper cannot get to it, fairly obvious. I do think, however, the stuttering run up should be banned, it gives the striker an unfair advantage. Any decent striker of a football, should be able to place the ball in the unsaveable zone 95% of the time without trying to fool the keeper with a stop/start run up.

Other research says the Grobbelaar type antics are purely to put doubt in the mind of the striker which sometimes clearly works. Regarding the keeper diving early, Ash Kington's penalty was well inside the saveable zone but as it took 0.17 seconds from leaving his foot to hitting the goal, no keeper in the world would stop that unless he had made the dive in that direction before Ash kicked it.

One of my teams once played in a Six a Side tournament which was decided by each side taking a player off every couple of minutes after extra time and next goal wins. I think we got down to three a side before our side scored the winner. Much more exciting way to decide a match and was probably quicker than a penalty shootout.

Of course, had North Ferriby not been bankrolled to this extent, it wouldn't have been them that City were playing. They had already beaten Ebbsfleet in the quarter final (by a single penalty). Then again, it would be slightly ironic if Ebbsfleet were complaining that they lost to North Ferriby because of the way that North Ferriby's team is funded. The point being that whoever City played in the semi final was probably going to be a club with a Conference-sized playing budget.

Had it been a boxing match I'd have awarded it to City by the narrowest of points margins, so, in that sense it was a pretty even contest. Football isn't a sport like horse racing where you have some horses handicapped.

An interesting idea and one I've heard before offered as an alternative to penalty shoot outs. We also had the golden goal and silver goal initiatives. I don't have the stats, but it seems to be that more often than not, once the 90 minutes have been played, at least one of the teams is more concerned with not losing than winning in extra time. This was certainly the case with 10 men Ferriby in the 2nd leg. So the dreaded penalty shoot out becomes highly probable. We then have the endless preparation for it once the final whistle has gone - some on tv can take 10 minutes to get started. But worse for me are the scenes once the decisive kick has been taken, with frenzied celebrations from the winners and absolute dejection for the losers. A keeper who has had a dreadful 120 minutes beforehand can be hailed a hero while a non specialist penalty taker who has played the game of his life is forever lumbered with the guilt of being responsible for missing the decisive kick. 2 legged ties like that semi final should be decided on the away goals rule - few European ties or 2 legged national cup competitions go to extra time.

He says:

Let's not forget, our progress as a club over some 90 years has been steady, based on sound principles administered by good kind hearted honest volunteers with a common interest in our local community. AND A SHED LOAD OF MONEY IN THE LAST 2 YEARS !

Chairman sounds a good guy reading what local people think. They don't seem so sure about the owners.

I don't understand why the directors would have refused an offer of all the shares for free in April.
