Best Goal Seen at Twerton
It was obviously the most important but was it the best you have seen ? Better than Sir Richard Bourne's header ?

it was hit from the same spot. 90yards from the goal.

I can assure you that Lord Bourne's header was far more ferocious than McC's 'lob'!!

Of course, it has to be pointed out that King Richard's goal was not scored at TP. Was McCootie's better than Birkby's overhead Exocet? No.

Re: Best Goal Seen at Twerton
Agreed. Birkby's is my all time favourite. As far as Nick's goal is concerned hungry did well to take it early as another chance had previously gone begging because he wanted too much time. (In fact Ferriby were excellent throughout the game at closing our forwards down). But what a deliciously clean strike and precise finish yesterday's was. It is certainly in my top 3.

Re: Best Goal Seen at Twerton
No doubt at all that McCootie's goal was right up there with the best I have seen at Twerton Park since I started watching in 1962.
Certainly shades of the great Charlie Fleming & ex-Cardiff City & Bristol City winger Johnny Watkins (1968-69 vintage) at their best spring to mind because not only did McCootie get some awesome power in the shot (lob???...how could it be a lob!!) he got some wicked downward loop on the shot as well.....haven't seen a TP crowd go quite so wild for many years!!....and yes it was a fantastic goal worthy of getting us right back on the Wembley path.

I think in terms of its significance it is being highlighted as one of the best. It was a tremendous strike, reminded me of one Ben Watson scored against Tamworth about four years ago. Still not a patch on Birkby or Adam Connolly's volley at Tamworth, which is the second best Bath City goal I've witnessed live.

Where would you rate Dan Cleverley's at Weymouth? I would have thought that was one of the best in your time...

Re: Best Goal Seen at Twerton
Top five. Connolly's at Tamworth was on his wrong foot and everything, and the ball didn't hit the floor from the throw-in. Unbelievable.
Then there's Jamie Cook's Maradona-style run at Hinckley, Jim's volley against Yeading plus many others.

Re: Best Goal Seen at Twerton
I have this theory that our impressions of goals depend on the angle we witnessed them from. My all time favourites were probably not chosen by others because we viewed them from different parts of the ground. I think it does make a difference if you are right in line with the trajectory of the ball, as I was on Saturday with McCootie's or level with the scorer (ditto Birkby's Classic). And yes, I was on Weymouth beach at the moment Sir Richard headed that ball....

Re: Best Goal Seen at Twerton
I think goals always look better when you witness them side-on. Nick McCootie's is one of the best I've seen from my view in the press box. For Birkby's I was under the Popular Side, almost in line with it, stood at the front. Would have been one of my first home games.
Alex Sykes rarely scored a bad goal as well. I'm sure he whacked one in off the underside of the bar at somewhere like King's Lynn once.

Re: Best Goal Seen at Twerton
Although I'm not keen on standing behind the goal, 2 of my favourite goals were witnessed from there. I'm always banging on about the Barry Thompson strike at Gravesend years ago, and there was Darren's at Grimsby which I knew was in as soon as it clipped the defender. It wasn't a City goal, but some of us went to Chipp to support Bedford in the play off final. If the net hadn't been there, we would have been knocked out by this missile...

... and Paul Bodin's at Bristol City. A classic in my mind for years, dribbled past 2 men and shot from 25 yards... - til I saw it on the TV replay and it wasn't quite like that at all!

Re: Best Goal Seen at Twerton
I think it was just the euphoria of the goal distorted my view of it, and I was living in B'ham at the time so never saw the goal again (you dont get BBC/HTV sports round up in B'ham!) until years later on the video!

Must admit I was a little disappointed when I eventually saw the clip of the Bodin goal as I remembered him being further from goal.

The Bodin goal is my number 2. To hit such a true volley as the ball falls over your shoulder and at such a dramatic stage of the game was undeniably epic.
