City 1 (Stearn) Newport County 1 att 253

City score first pre season goal to secure draw v. League 2 opponents.

The most one sided draw you'll ever see. City dominated from start to finish and Newport scored from a moment of sloppiness in midfield. They didn't have a single shot second half while Mann (2) Tyler, Watto and Brunt had good chances before Stearn put one away.
Raynes was top notch and I was impressed by the triallist Tom Richards. Phillips needs to do more for me though.

I wouldn't agree that we dominated from start to finish. Ryan Clarke made 2 fine saves before they scored and I can't remember their keeper making a save in the 1st half. We had lots of possession that half and passed the ball around but it was mainly sideways and backwards. We improved 2nd half and played with more urgency and so looked more threatening and were well on top even before Newport made changes. At the moment it still looks as though scoring goals may well be a problem and their appears to be a lack of pace going forward. However Tyler Harvey looks like a genuine goalscorer once we create a few chances for him.

I didn’t go, was at a wedding. Jon French was supposedly at the same event, he made a handful of appearances for us in 1997.

He was one of our better loan signings - think he went on to play for Hull City?

Yes, again a much improved performance in front of a disappointingly low crowd - perhaps to be expected with the bigger draw of the Rovers game in the week and the weather last night. The back 5 really is starting to look solid already and, as mentioned, much livelier in front of goal. I thought that Brunt seemed much more mobile and effective. However, presently, the striking options around him look limited- unless Stearn is going to start every match (which seems doubtful but I would be happy to see). I know that Jerry was talking about getting a Championship/Premiership loanee so perhaps they will fill this gap.

With Brunt suspended for 3 games....that'll be a week then...I suppose Stearn will play up front alongside Tyler.

So that is why Jerry hasn't used the Harvey - Brunt combo. He is trying out other pairings. This is difficult to judge against league defenders.

Interesting theory and that would be a good partnership to see as well.
