Max O'Leary in goal.
Must only be a selection band who saw Tommy Conway actually play in that 20/21 season.
Got only goal tonight to knock West Ham out of the cup. O'Leary in goal again.
And we even got a mention on commentary. I think saying that we were a good club for young players - though I wasn't really watching/listening properly!

We are a well managed club according to the commentator, Jonathan Pierce, who did a great job in disguising his love for his team. Also mentioned Beechen Cliff School a couple of times.

Re: Ex Romans' Thread
Strange to hear your old school being mentioned by the commentator. Thought he said that Beechen Cliff was noted for its sporting activity or was it simply due to two of the Bristol City team had attended that school.
I must admit I attended the school under its previous incarnation and football was not a sporting option as it was rugby oriented. Although perhaps the most noted former pupil was Roger Bannister who was the first person to run the under 4 minute mile.

Yes I think he said that a couple of players went to school there. And Paul Gover was a more famous former pupil!

I think the Demon Headmaster might be a more famous ex-pupil!

Re: Ex Romans' Thread
I played cricket for my school there in the 1960s. Beechen scored c.120 for very few wickets, we scored one run more for 9 winning in the last over. An ex BANES councillor scored the winning run with me as partner.
In another game against another Bath school, it may have been King Edwards, I hit a crashing off drive for four that Somerset's Viv Richards would have been proud of.

Zak Vyner attended Beechen Cliff School alongside fellow Bristol City academy graduate Max O'Leary. Vyner not born in Bath or ex Bath City player but still interesting non the less.

It was City of Bath Boys School (I think) - grammar school - before merging with Oldfield Boys School (secondary modern) to become Beechen Cliff Comprehensive. I went to Oldfield where rugby was compulsory.
Me and some mates started Oldfield Utd soccer team and played in the youth league. I remember a game at Kensington fields where we only had 9 men including Paul Glover. We left most of the defending to him and won comfortably.

I too went to Oldfield - many unhappy memories. We were indeed forced to play rugby. Football was banned. Sports master said that football was evil and that rugby was the only true sport. Worst four years of my life.

Watching Bridport play recently. Had a chat with Brian Macauley, City keeper early 70s (?). Still in good nick and enjoying the game as a spectator although he has in the past helped with advice/coaching at Bridport and Axminster, the latter being his home town.

He played over 200 games for us in the second half of the 60s. I remember his debut when I guess he was only about 17 - from memory I think it was home to Yeovil and he’d only been signed earlier that day so was really thrown in at the deep end. He developed into a really reliable keeper.

Yes, good keeper in a pretty inconsistent team.comrade powell wrote:He played over 200 games for us in the second half of the 60s. Plymouth v Leeds
Just watching this game.
Commentator just talking about one of the Plymouth player and mentioned us along with Turnip Town and Bristol C.
I wasn’t concentrating so missed who he was talking about and I don’t recognise any name.
Anybody know who it was?
