Comrade has been converted, was it on the A361 pilgrimage or Bas's persistence?

Re: New keeper
Bas can't believe Somerset would allow him to play football so near to the cricket season. And as a Gloucestershire fan, what is our director of football thinking?!

Re: New keeper
The irony of us signing a keeper who normally whacks the ball out of the ground...
And that was a joke before anyone kicks off.

I should point out that contrary to what I put on the website - now amended - he has not been signed as a keeper but an outfield player.

Didn't he get a few at Lord's in the one dayer last season?

Is this a huge Yuffie wind up?

Strange when he has played goalkeeper for every other team. An all rounder indeed.

Re: New keeper
He scored twice as a goalkeeper as well in the past. If he gets a turn in goal he'll have a chance on equaling Jason Mellor's goal tally this season.
Because I sometimes have the humour of a child I have this image of him wearing cricket pads as shin pads, and huge socks covering them up.

Re: New keeper
Cannot believe this can be true.
Surely, as Bas said, Somerset would not allow this with their first friendly fixture only days away. Also what sort of message is this sending out to younger players who did such a good job at Whitehawk and Farnborough and deserve another opportunity if there are to be changes.

It will be interesting to hear the reasoning behind it, but I do tend to agree.
When I was told I assumed he was being signed as a keeper as it was rumoured on Saturday Mellor hurt his shoulder in the warm-up. So if he was struggling and the two U21 keepers weren't available then it didn't seem that odd a move, but as a outfield player it does seem a strange one.

He looks rather like Frankie Artus... maybe it is a sneaky plan to confuse the opposition.

Re: New keeper
I must be the only one who is excited about this signing. It could boost attendances at the end of the season. I mean when was the last time we had an England cap playing for City? (albeit England caps at Cricket)
He'll be able to add valuable experience to this depressed dressing room and pass on health tips for the summer. Maybe some of our players will be taking up cricket in a bid to stay fit ready for next season?
Cracking move by Howells and the Board! Looking forward to his debut tonight!

For the record, he has only played for England under 19s, and that was a few times in 2000. But I agree, he always comes across as a very professional sportsman and his presence should have a positive effect in the dressing room. He's also got an impressive array of tattoos...

Re: New keeper
Hasn't this become a bit of a joke now? The first article in the Chronicle gave the distinct impression that if Trego signed in time he would be in the squad for tonight's game - the second one makes it clear that that was never going to happen. It could of course just have been a clever publicity exercise, although we aren't generally very good at those!

Possibly just a communication cock-up, but has me laughing, Peter Trego too - http://www.somersetcountycc.co.uk/2015/03/peter-trego-to-host-st-georges-day-quiz/ - and if you google Peter Trego Bath City news items appear first, so can't be all bad.

He was out there warming up before the BS game as an outfield player. Trying to head in some of Stearn's crosses.

Re: New keeper
My mate just sent me a link to The Guardian's online cricket round-up 'The Spin' which has given Trego's move some worldwide exposure:
"A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS
The best thing about writing The Spin are the emails. The address is down there at the bottom of the page, along with an invitation to write. And many of you often do. So I know that there are a fair few of you scattered around the world, especially in South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. I’m going to have to beg your indulgence for this, the most parochial of stories.
Long-time readers will know all about the fondness I feel for Somerset all-rounder Peter Trego. He’s something of a cult figure around my old stomping grounds in the south-west. Imagine my delight then, when I read that he has just signed a deal to play for Bath City FC in the Vanarama Conference South. I’ll be honest and admit that until now, I had no idea that the Vanarama Conference South was a thing. You see, in Bath few people has ever paid much mind to the fortunes of the football team, singularly unsuccessful bunch that they are. I mean, why would you when the city is also home to one of the finest rugby clubs in the world?
Ken Loach, oddly enough, has always been a diehard fan. Other than that, the only thing particularly notable thing I could tell you about them is that Bobby Zamora once spent a month on loan there in the early 2000s. So, you see, no one would sign for Bath for the glamour of it, and I don’t imagine that, after 15 years as a professional cricketer, Trego is in it for the money either, since it was only last year that head coach Lee Howells was complaining that he has to pick youth team players because can’t afford to “bring lads in on £400 to £500 a week wages”.
So why do it? For the fun and the glory I guess, and because, well, why not? Trego’s commitment to doubling up his careers in cricket and lower league football has always been one of the most endearing things about him. Before now, he’s had spells with Margate – where he once scored a free-kick from inside his own half – Clevedon, Chippenham, and his home town of Weston-super-Mare. He says he is “a long way off” playing for Bath anyway, and that for the moment he’s only going to be training with the club.
Trego is never, and was never, going to be another Arthur Milton, the last of the double internationals. At the age of 33, his shot of playing for England cricket are long gone, let alone his chance at making it as a professional footballer. But it’s good to know that there’s still a sportsman out there chasing the old schoolboy dream, even if it’s in the Vanarama Conference South."
The next section is that the first game of the County Championship starts this week... in Abi Dhabi
