Grimes, Wanjau-Smith and yet more loanees
Even by the standards of what’s gone before this season, today’s news takes some beating. So that’s three contracted players, two of them recruited in the summer and one in the middle of a two year deal, who are no longer at the Club and we’re not even into December.
It will be argued that two of them may return but that must be in doubt. There are probably others but I can only recall Mills leaving as early as Sol W-S after signing from Hereford. If the reasons given for Grimes’ sabbatical are correct then fair enough and hopefully he can sort the issues out and return.
Let’s hope that the latest arrivals are better suited to NLS than many recent loanees - at least Ben Seymour was amongst the goals for Hampton last season although he’d only netted one for Torquay. Tomlinson has only featured in a single game for them so far but it sounds like he’s found it difficult to break into a settled defence.
I was feeling more optimistic about our chances earlier this week but this brings home what a mess things are at present.

It feels as if Bath City is just a set of revolving doors.

I thought Wanjau-Smith might feel the benefit of Jerry leaving, but obviously his mind was set. Pity as I felt he has a lot to offer with the right guidance.
If Grimes is finding the travelling a struggle I can well understand it. It always amazes me how far lads will travel to get a game but obviously that is not for everyone.
I will reserve judgement on the loanees but have short term loans ever been a success? I think Tom Smith came on loan first didn't he?

Batten, Ball and Ewan Clarke are three that started as loanees. Probably others too.

But did they come on 1month loans?

In his interview a couple of days ago the Maidstone manager revealed that they were keeping tabs on Wanjau Smith as they’d heard that he was not adjusting to part time football.
I believe Ewan Clarke came as a long term loanee at the start of last season not just for the month. Can’t remember about Batten and Ball. .

Surprised to hear Sol couldn't adjust to part-time football despite years as a part-time footballer before signing for Maidstone, but fair enough. Not particularly upset at losing him either, he's an experienced forward at the top end of this level and in the supposed 'peak years' age-wise as a footballer, but had shown very little of that so far this season. Not sure we've had a player flatter to deceive so much for a while. Lovely lad though and wish him well. Grimes will be a loss though if he ends up moving on, I've liked the look of him and he's been unfortunate through injury and suspension to not get a run of games in a settled position.
This latest pair of loans only being for an initial month is probably wise. A new manager will be coming in as their loans draw to a close and will have the option of persuing extensions or not, rather than being stuck with them.

Be good if a new manager could find a Hoggy/Holloway/Harris type midfielder.

Isn't Russe that player? He still isn't back to anywhere near his best.

Sounds like Grimes' absence is to do with work commitments and not a falling out with Jerry(!) - apparently he qualified as a Chartered Accountant a few months ago and is now Manager at the firm he works for in Exeter so understandable why he might find it hard to commit to travelling for training etc.

Any chance we can loan out Wilson?

To be fair our entire front three contributed very little tonight. When you are digging in you need an outlet and none of them provided one.
