Gary Owers' interview after Welling defeat
Gary was kind enough as always to give us a few minutes of his time after the game yesterday.
Lets hope for better next Saturday against Sutton.

As he says, he has a lot of concerns leading up to the Sutton match.

It sounded a very flat performance on the radio. As Gary says we don't seem to be prepared to roll up our sleeves and do the hard graft.
It is currently relegation form again which cannot go on for much longer. There are a number of players who have been a disappointment. The trouble is that leads to short term fixes rather than building for the future.

He is building a squad but we learned yesterday ( but we probably knew it) that we don't have dig deep battling qualities esssntial for a successful team.
It was awful awful listening yesterday so all we can hope for is a learn and progress.
We need that leader on pitch still I fear

You can't build a team on loan players and attempted short term fixes of this nature are not helping in the long term. The lack of a leader has been obvious for a long time. My views are consistent and the team lacks the character to dig in at places like Welling. Gary Owers seems to recognise this but I don't seem him doing much about it, loan players are not the answer.
In recent years we have had the likes of Hogg, Coupe, Rollo, Harris and Holloway. These are players who took it personally when the team lost and it really did ruin their day. Gary Owers needs to find some more like this, they do not have to be the best player football wise but they need to be strong characters. The guy Axel looked ok in the game last week but generally he won't find the sort of player we need watching U21 games.
