Concept...
Can't remember who but someone posted something interesting a while back about a club having a 'tour of duty' or similar. Basically designating one away during the season as THE away for everyone that can't make many to prioritise, making it almost a home atmosphere. Wealdstone also do this with the last away before Christmas every year, which was us last season. What does everyone think of the idea, should we get something similar off the ground this season?
Oliver Holtaway That might have been me, I met an Aldershot fan recently, they do it. I think they deliberately pick a match that probably wouldn't get a good crowd otherwise, hence it's a tour of 'duty' - i.e. they deliberately pick an awkward match against crap opposition, crap ground, Tuesday night etc. But we could do it differently. E.g. I don't generally attend away games but have my eye on Wealdstone & Oxford City this year - if there was a mini-campaign to get a high away attendance for a particular match, it might convince me if I'm wavering.
Selections...
TOUR OF DUTY VOTE - One away match this season that all of us that can, be it away regulars or rare travellers, make every effort to get to and try to turn it almost into a home match. Those that have shown interest and discussed briefly have whittled it down to these 3, but feel free to add another fixture if you wish. The 3 below are all on Saturdays that aren't subject to Cup postponements and are relatively attractive ties in this bleak grithole of a division. Feel free to vote/discuss below
Wealdstone - November 21st
Maidstone United - September 19th
Sutton United - February 13th

Re: Tour of Duty
On a personal point of view, I'd vote for Wealdstone. I think I'm in the UK in November. They used to be local rivals to my team, Wembley FC, in the 1960's. I used to love their old ground, Lower Mead. I first saw the Who in 1960'something in a pub in Wealdstone.....I was an underage drinker back then! Bring it on.

Re: Tour of Duty
With my Wealdstone connections, that's the trip I'd vote for as well. It's one of the shortest Saturday trips, they are traditional rivals and with their passionate fans there should be a great atmosphere.

Re: Tour of Duty
Just bringing this topic to the top again. Palms, with the Wealdstone trip almost upon us, I assume it came top in the survey. It would be great if we could have a large presence of City fans there next Saturday. As I posted above, it's one of our easier trips by road or rail and matches with them are usually close. Despite their thrashing by Colchester on Saturday, they were unbeaten during September and October and it could well be a tough game for us.

I've already booked my trains and will try to drag London friends along - if they're not off supporting trendy Dulwich Hamlet
Would be great to give the team an extra boost away from home at this fragile point in the season

Re: Tour of Duty
Are we all going to try and get the same trains? There is a Facebook page for people to join up to and invite their friends. https://www.facebook.com/events/1519815838332121/
It is also a fixture for The World Famous 1927 Club (formerly the London branch of the Cardiff City Supporters Club) so there should hopefully be a lot of London types as well.
Should be a good one.

Re: Tour of Duty
I've had Wealdstone in the diary since the fixtures came out. Great turnout for the FA Trophy last season and a great welcome. Ended up in the clubhouse afterwards having one (or more) too many and not getting back to my in-laws til late. Bringing my 7 year old son this time to keep it more civilised! I remember having a chat with a couple of the volunteers there and they were telling me how they were enjoying the league and how they got on with all the other clubs.... But can't stand Whitehawk. Really is the unifying theme of National League South!

Re: Tour of Duty
As someone who watches most of their games away this is an excellent idea. I'll be there for Wealdstone but would also like the Oxford City game to be targeted.

Oxford City would be a great day out if only for the pubs...

Re: Tour of Duty
Agreed if you make a weekend of it. The problem with Oxford's ground is that it's some three miles from the city centre. For me, the best place we visit pub wise, and for other reasons, is St Albans. Several would compete for the worst but Chelmsford and Concord take some beating!
