1985 season

I don't want to derail the Bobby Jones thread but can someone please tell me more about the weird points system (2 for home win, 3 for away win) that cost us the title in 1985? Was it just in the Conference? How did teams react??

Yes it was a trial on behalf of the rest of football! From The football league to the bath and district it was still the usual 2 points for a win - 1 for a draw. Designed to encourage more attacking okay etc as football was a bit in the doldrums attendance wise. If course what we don't remember or know is whether the Wealdstone manager made them attack more away from home to get those extra points! From memory I don't recall any conf team changing the way they played though (this was the80s)!
But... It must have been deemed a success as the 3 points for a win across the board swiftly followed, not sure why the 2 for a home win also changed, simplicity I guess - or maybe they realised it's the home teams responsibility to entertain not the away teams!

The odd thing about the final table was that we won twice as many home games as Wealdstone, they won twice as many as City away.
I don't remember many of the games, mainly because I was in Australia until the new year. I was totally confused on my return. My first game was a trophy replay at Bishop Stortford. It was only at the end of the match that I discovered it was a second replay. And when I went to the first away league match I couldn't understand all this talk of three points.

What I do remember is that Wealdsone had a very strong team that year and later won the Trophy at Wembley, beating the unmentionables from Lincs. But what was funny was that having won the Conference title, they finished the league campaign at Barnet and lost 7-1.

I thought this experiment only ran for a season, but it actually carried on until the 1986/87 season, the first time automatic promotion was included between Conference and the Football League.

And I'm still bitter about the experiment as I missed out on being born months after City were a Football League side for the first time.

Weren't we the team in the election process that season anyway but were stitched up failed to gain votes again?

Correct on the election to the league. I think the three teams in front of us didn't have a ground that would meet the league standards so we were the representative but given the lateness of the decision we hardly had time to canvass support, plus it was unlikely the league would vote for a team that hadn't even won their league.
Having said that Wigan were elected when we went up for the 77/78 election and they hadn't won their league that season.
Its all about who you know and we didn't know enough.
