Hemel 1 v City 1 (Rigg) Empty Hemel 1 v City 1 (Rigg)

It did rain a lot around here last night. I might be on my own for the eventual Tuesday rearrangement. And still the Rigg suspension carries on.

Just got to the pub near the ground (Crabtree). It's not particularly wet around here.

So, the first mention that there was any potential for the game being in danger was at 10:15 this morning, after we had already set off. Hmmmm.

They must have a particularly rubbish pitch. No other games in the area seem to be off.

That's unbelievable. I see Concord Rangers is called off as well but that is more understandable.

Went to see St Albans lose at home to Truro. The pitch at Clarence Park was absolutely fine, no trace of any waterlogging there.

After an abortive trip to Hemel, went to see Bradford Town beat Clevedon Town 3-1.
A few City regulars on the terraces, and Sekani playing number 3 for Clevedon. Alex Russell on the bench for them as well.
Nice afternoon, local Kettlesmith ales in the bar served by another City regular....cheers Timboa.
Nice to see Hilly and Brother Brush as well.

Went to Paulton 3 Shortwood 2. Not many City links, but an enjoyable game and local to home.

Already in London when news of the postponement came through, so went to the Den to see the Lions beat Brentford. Scored in the first minute then spent the rest of the game desperately holding on to the lead.

I saw Bristol Telephones 0-1 Portishead Town, ticked off a new ground.

Not a classic. Portishead won it with a hotly disputed penalty on the half hour (well, Western League players object every decision. I thought the foul was just inside the box). Same player missed another penalty a few minutes later, again this was argued over but I thought it was nailed on. Phones then had a player sent off just before half time for kicking out during a tangle. Wasn’t surprised. Their players complained. Second half was surprisingly tepid with Phones having most of the ball but didn’t look like scoring. Neither team helped by a poor playing surface, but these clubs don’t have the funds to maintain a good pitch.

Think Alan Walsh was sat in the dugout for Portishead.

Five red cards I’ve seen in four Western League matches this season, with the other ending in a mass brawl at full time. Anyone assigned to officiate a match at that level has my sympathy. Second half both teams behaved themselves better, but overall compared to our level the abuse the officials face is fierce.

Sekani was booked six times for us in 300+ games. He's been booked twice this season. That's what the Western League does to you...

Good start. Cracker from Rigg. Sloppy error let them back in. Rigg missed 1 on 1. They got stronger. 2nd half mostly them but us on the counter. Couple of goalmouth scrambles. Good City following in a good mid week crowd for Hemel.

While Compton is not a great scorer of goals he is certainly a scorer of great goals!

I thought that last night's match was a great advertisement for Conference South and with admission at just £5, an excellent alternative to staying in and watching our turgid national team.

Stand out moment last night, apart from Riggs goal, Jacks offside worldy.........

Me – See Wealdstone lost in semi of FA Trophy on Saturday;
Comrade – Yes, their fans are quick to the fans forum to comment;
Fan close by – Yes, they like a good moan !
Me - yes they already think Wilkinson is s**t.
Fan close by – I know ! I’m Wilkinson !
Comrade (whispering)- That looks like Bobby Wilkinson.

And so it was Bobby Wilkinson their manager, scouting both teams who they play soon! I was mortified. Went and shook his hand. He was ok. Couldn’t make it up.

Hemel 1 v City 1 (Rigg) Empty Re: Hemel 1 v City 1 (Rigg)

I was a bit surprised (but only a bit in view of Jerry's reticence in that area) that we didn't use any of the substitutes last night.

It seems to me that there are two aspects to this. The first is that if we really want to make the play-offs it was a game we needed to win so I would have thought it was worth putting at least one of the strikers - probably Semenyo - on. If we had lost as a result we would be one point worse off, whereas three would have made a lot of difference, especially in the context of other recent results.

The other is the fact that we have another game on Friday. Jerry has referred a few times to managing the players' 'loads' so I would have thought that he might have wanted to use the subs to give some of those who had also played on Saturday a bit of a rest, especially someone like Andy Watkins with the amount of travelling he has to do.

I asked him that on Twitter and he said:

It was a tight game for experienced players the longer it went on. They all looked strong physically and we were still creating chances so no need to change things. It was discussed at length but tactically we had it right last night

True, but it would have left us further adrift of Hemel and, realistically, relying on chasing one team for a play-off spot, rather than two. Hemel have a favourable run-in so I think we'll do well to catch them regardless. It was important to win last night, but also important to not lose.

My interview with Jerry, including a discussion on the no subs, has been uploaded.

I was able to watch the turgid rubbish and listen to the excellent commentary at the same time. And Stillman did say Watto joined in 2003.

Only ten years out. I called him Marley Watkins in one of the friendlies as well, Bob correcting me both times. Might just keep quiet when he’s on the ball from now on.
