City v WSM
Can City build on the Chip result and now get some consistency with goals and wins?Twerton faithful deserve to see both after a barren home spell.

Rigg for Miles only change. Morton returns to bench. No Miles nor Watto in squad. Top league scorer Grubb in WSM line up along with ex City players Greenslase and Diallo.

City lose 2 nil. Bah. After the Lord Mayors show etc etc. 4 successive games at Twerton without a goal.

Jerry is learning that no matter what style of football you play you need at least one striker on the pitch.
In the friendlies I thought our summer recruitment of strikers was poor and no one has attempted to prove me wrong. Jarvis had his best game for us on Saturday but was again back to his ineffective worst today. We simply do not have an outlet up front for our midfield to use so we end up knocking hopeful long balls over the top for Opi and Smiffy to run on to.
But we were poor all over the pitch today. Presumably Smiffy got MOM for his saturday performance.
We can only play better on Monday.

What can you say - I went to Chippenham expecting to come away disappointed but instead came away very pleasantly surprised. Today I went in hope but felt let down.
How many games is it without a home goal? Gerry says 4 but I heard someone after the game say 5.Whatever it obviously tells a story.
The club has some very dedicated supporters but when I hear some of these saying they are not going to travel away, for in some cases worrying reasons, we need to be concerned.

We haven't scored a home goal since the 4-0 win against Thurrock - that's 3 league and 1 trophy matches. I suppose the only positive is that Weston are the first to score at TP since Dartford on 24 October.

It was once again very poor. We talk about a passing game and Weston showed us how.
Very very disappointed and harder and harder to justify a long journey to watch it.

Weston were as good as Chippenham were poor. Better team on the day won both matches.
It happens.

Re: City v WSM
Despite how below par we were today, and how impressive Weston were, I thoroughly expect us to beat them in the return match in mid-January.
If we sorted out this inconsistency it'd be a joy. We had the high of Margate followed by the low at Hendon in the trophy, and now this in the last few days. Whilst Weston were stacks better than a woeful Chippenham side, we didn't play anywhere near as well. It's not a sudden problem under Jerry, this has probably hampered us in every season we've ever played at this level. Even when we were promoted we had spells of blowing hot and cold.
Still, makes it quite entertaining going along, as I genuinely have no idea what sort of performance to expect when I watch/commentate.

My rule of thumb is that the bigger the crowd the worse we play. Plus if we have won well one game we will be rubbish the next. It is surefire.

Disappointed that once again we get some momentum only for it to be wasted. The penalty shoot-out at Margate provided a lift only for it to be followed immediately by the Bognor game - a very similar encounter to today which we would have lost if Bognor had been a better side - and then after the high of Saturday at Chippenham we had today.
The playing one striker at home and sitting deep is sadly reminiscent of the Howells/Britton era, when we were often told that it was 4-3-3 and not 4-5-1 but I don’t recall it being any more successful. In some ways it is more of a problem now because inviting teams to come on to us and then trying to pass our way out means we are likely to get caught in possession in more dangerous areas than if we have just hoofed it away.
If we are going to play that system then the lone striker has to be someone who can win the ball in the air and hold it up for teammates, neither of which attributes Jarvis appears to have. It all very well people saying about how much running he does, but it never seems to much effect and he rarely looks likely to score either.
Our recent run of form - 5 points from a possible 12 in December with 3 games out of 4 being at home - is even more frustrating when you consider how close the league is.
Hopefully Jerry can sort it out, but I sense that I am not the only person for who the jury is still out.
