Bath City had to battle hard to secure a point from their Twerton Park encounter with Wealdstone after playing almost the entire match with ten men following the 5th minute dismissal of Darren Jones. The visitors were also reduced in numbers midway through the second half when Ryan Sellars was shown a second yellow card by referee Mr. Lee Brennan but, in the end, both sides had to settle for a share of the spoils.

Wealdstone started the game brightly and the first flashpoint arrived in the 5th minute, when Daniel Green latched on to a though ball and outpaced City captain Jones. The centre half made a last ditch sliding challenge to halt Green’s progress and, although he appeared to make contact with the ball, the referee adjudged that a foul was committed. Having made this call, the official had little choice but to brandish the red card, albeit Jones may consider himself to be slightly unlucky.

Green took the resulting free kick 20 yards from goal, but could only blast his effort into the heart of the City defensive wall.

The early drama continued, with Mr Brennan once again holding centre stage. Wealdstone goalkeeper Jonathan North caught the ball outside his area on 7 minutes but, with the home faithful baying for his banishment, the referee flourished only a yellow card which was probably the correct sanction.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, the hosts were holding their share of possession, and a 10th minute searching cross from the right by Kevin Amankwaah flew across the face of goal without a teammate being able to apply the telling touch. The Stones responded three minutes later, when a cross from the left was met with a looping header from Matthew Whichelow that was nodded off the line by Jack Batten.

The game continued in even fashion with Whichelow dragging his shot from 25 yards well wide of the target, and then Matthew Day’s ball in from the other flank on 22 minutes was glanced wide of Luke Southwood’s far post by Abobaker Eisa.

Nick McCootie’s shot from the edge of the away box was deflected behind for a corner and, from Jack Compton’s corner kick, Amankwaah’s header thudded into the ground and bounced over North’s crossbar. Anthony Straker then delivered a cross from the left on 25 minutes that just eluded the onrushing Nat Jarvis in front of goal.

Compton’s curling free kick was expertly pushed away from under his crossbar by North on the half hour mark and, at the other end, Whichelow’s clipped effort from 25 yards was straight at Southwood.

The best chance of the game fell to City seven minutes before the break when Compton’s free kick into the box found the unmarked Jarvis at the far post, but the striker somehow directed his header wide.

The second period saw a spell of midfield drudgery until Wealdstone were also reduced to ten men in the 58th minute. Andy Watkins raced away down the right wing, only to be felled by the chasing Sellars. The full back who had already been booked was shown another yellow card, and was thereby consigned to an early shower. The resulting free kick by Compton was met by Batten, but his header was partially blocked and was comfortably collected by North.

McCootie burst forward on the hour mark and his fierce effort from distance was deflected for a corner, but scoring chances remained at a premium. With 15 minutes left on the clock, Straker’s cross from the left picked out McCootie, but his powerful header was narrowly wide of North’s near post.

Wealdstone’s main threat came from substitute Alan O’Brien down the left-hand side but, despite his pace and trickery, he was unable fashion any clear openings for his teammates.

Jamie Lucas and Miles Welch-Hayes replaced McCootie and Watkins respectively, but City could not find a decisive goal. As the game entered stoppage time, a good run down the left resulted in a pass inside to Lucas, but the substitute’s shot-on-the-turn was wide of the far post.

The closest the visitors came to breaking the deadlock was a curling shot from Luke Williams in the 92nd minute, and then Southwood was called into his first meaningful action of the game when he brilliantly palmed away Green’s dangerous free kick from under his crossbar.

This was never a classic, but it was keenly competitive throughout and City worked extremely hard to stay in contention whilst they were a man down. There seemed a sense around the ground that the dismissal of Wealdstone’s Sellars should have signalled a period of more dominance from the hosts, but the earlier exertions were taking their toll on Jim Rollo’s men. Once the dust has settled and all things taken into account, this must be considered a well-deserved point in difficult and testing circumstances against strong and well organised opposition.

Great review as usual.

It was an entertaining game despite the 0-0 scoreline. I think we were lucky O'Brian wasn't on from the start.
